The Heroes Monument Of Surabaya

In this monument, we can enjoy not only the historical of Indonesian people but also the Chinese expedition road map to Hujung Galuh and collections of variously old weapons.

It was originally the idea of the first President of The Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, to build the Heroed Monument to memorize the legendary 10 November 1945 war in Surabaya. This monument start builded at 10 November 1951 and stands on the area of Raad Van Justitie that used to be occupied as Appellate Court during the Dutch colonial age, and the Ken Pe Tai (Japanese Military Police) Base during the World War II.

The area exactly was the most zealous battle point and the strongest defense zone to confront the allied force and most heroic battle ground where vigorous Surabaya Warriors (Arek-Arek Suroboyo) beat and slipped off the Japanese troops weapons.

In the frontage of the monument there are 8 relief featuring a serial histories of Surabaya. They tell about the landing of Tar-Tar Troops in Hujung Galuh, various believed to be the origin of Surabaya city, and the condition of Surabaya to date.

The sculptures of the proclaimators of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno - Hatta, stand firmly in the entrance of Ken Pe Tai (Japanese Military Police) Base. The heroes wirh beautifully design gardens that make it look glorious killing machines used during the 10 November war in every single side of the gardens.

The heroes monument was physically constructed with 45 yard height, 3.1 metre lower diameter and 1.3 metre upper diameter to symbolize the thrilling courage and bravery of Arek-Arek Suroboyo to stop the attemp of allied forces to re-occupy Surabaya at the end of the World War II. This monument also provided with the museum, is so called 10 November Heroes Museum.

10 November Heroes Museum builded in the year 1998 and opened in the year 2000, constructed to support the Heroes Monument design in 2-storey pyramid with luxurious interiors and functioning to preserve various historicat collections, such as : maps of Tar-Tar invasion, counter-attack to chase away the Tar-Tar troops by Raden Wijaya, and Chinese expedition to Hujung Galuh, and various weapons used during 10 November war and displayed in Visual Auditorium.

This museum also stores the transistor radio of Bung Tomo and flags of a number of battallions of guerilla fighters and paramilitaries, such us Oentoeng Soerapati Battallion, Wiropati Battallion, and Center of East Java Rebellion.

In the first floor, there are socio-drama sculpture featuring the Surabaya Warriors (Arek-Arek Suroboyo) listening to Bung Tomo oration on the radio to burn their courage and braveness. Beside, there is a Hall of Fame presenting various figures of well-being, injured, dying and dead warriors to strunggle for the Indonesian independence. There is also a visual auditorium for playing documentary films about 10 November war with 25 minute duration.

Various collections of weapons use by Surabaya Warriors, Japanese Troops and allied force during 10 November war are well displayed in the second floor. Some of the collection are Browning Gun Model 1924 Caliber 12.7mm, PSM Altillery Mortar Caliber 80 mm, Japanese Brend Rifle Caliber 6.5 mm, Stand Machine Gun MK II Caliber 9 mm, Arisaka Japanese Carbine Bayonet. All were seized from the Japanese Troops.

The Heroes Monument is located in Center of Surabaya and accessible by taxies and public means of transportation. It is only apart less than 2 kilometre from Pasar Turi Train Station, and only apart 5 kilometre from Tanjung Perak Port. It is reachable within 1 hours from Purabaya Bus Terminal and 1.5 hours from Juanda International Airport by private vehicles. And if we lodge in hotel which have near by location of the monument, we can use the transportation of traditional that is Becak (pedicab) at the same time enjoy the atmosphere of town Surabaya. 3 kilometre Southerly from the monument, we will meet the Majapahit Hotel (Yamato Hotel), that is historic place the happening of “Perobekan Bendera Belanda” by Surabaya Warriors at one blow place lodge five star.
